First off - Nate is 13 There is no cost to watch the 7 on 7 football tourn. at BYU. Ty played a 7 on 7 at Weber State Sat. They play 5 games in pool play to be seeded in a bracket. Once in the bracket - one loss and you're out. They took 3rd, playing 8 games total from 8 am - 7 pm. This will make it easy for us to swing by BYU and catch a game or two (30 min. games) when ever it fits into the reunion schedule.
Steve, Ty & I had a sobering experience at one of Ty's games. One of the boys on the team from Layton High School caught a pass, handed the ball to the ref., then dropped to the ground. There were athletic trainers at every field, they rendered help immediately. When they assessed the situation - he had no pulse and was not breathing. They started CPR and asked all of the players to run and get ice. (They did not know at this point what was wrong with him.) All of the boys from both teams ran to get bags of ice from the concession stand. Someone with a large umbrella came to shade the boy and the medical professionals who had now arrived. They coved the boy with ice packs, shocked his heart 2 times, filled him with meds through an IV, put in a breathing tube, and took him to the ER.
As you all know Steve's brother Jeff was a paramedic, as now is his brother Doug. We were amazed watching these skilled men act so quickly and calmly to save this young man. We both reflected on the personal gratification that must come from such a noble profession.
Unfortunately, the news came back a few hours later that this young man died. We saw his father run from the sidelines, drop to his knees, and watch helplessly as he lost his son. We were amazed at how quickly and unexpectedly life could end. They started off that morning, father and son, for a fun day of sport and competition....
Hug your family and tell them you love them!
